Smudging Rituals to Cleanse Self & Home Space

Smudging is a ritual where dried sage leaves/bundles, Palo Santo or any other sacred plants/herbs are burned, and the smoke thus created removes all the negative energy (cleansing and purifying the space or person) from your personal aura, home or office space. It's an ancient Native American technique that has become popular all over the world. It's believed that the smoke from the sage attaches to the negative energy and carries it to the Great Spirit. I personally also blend some dried herbs and flower petals like rosemary, lavender, hibiscus, rose, etc.

Sage leaves have antimicrobial properties. This means they keep infectious bacteria, viruses, and fungi at bay. Burning sage clears out impurities, lower entities, pathogens, and even insects have been fundamental to the practice of smudging. Smudging with Sage has long been used to connect to the spiritual realm or enhance intuition. Also, it is used as a ritual tool to rid yourself — or your space — of negativity. This includes past traumas, bad experiences, or negative energies from others.

Rosemary soothes the environment and sets in peace and calm. Lavender enhances relaxation and happiness in addition to its beautiful scent. Flowers like hibiscus and rose add to the aroma as well as purify the environment with love and peace energies.

Palo Santo is a mystical tree and in Spanish, the name literally means “Holy Wood”. It has been popularized for keeping energies grounded and clear. It provides an uplifting scent that raises your vibration in preparation for meditation and allows for a deeper connection to the Source of all creation. It is also said that Palo Santo brings good fortune to those who are open to its magic. Palo Santo is traditionally used for relieving common colds, flu symptoms, stress, asthma, headaches, anxiety, depression, inflammation, emotional pain and more.

It is very important to set some intentions before you start the process, so you can simply start by connecting to the higher power you believe in and ask that all negative energies be removed from your personal space/home/office space.

I start by connecting to Mother Goddess Energies and calling in the elements of Spirit, Water, Fire, Earth & Air and placing a symbolic representation of each on my altar.

You then use a matchstick or candle to light the tip of the sage bundle/Palo Santo and once the fire sets in, we simply blow it off using a feather or hands. It is the smoke that we want to create here.

We start by first cleansing our personal energies. We move the Sale bundle around us and through our hands/feather visualise the smoke carrying away all the stuck and negative energies, up in the sky.

We then place the Sage Bundle in the burner and carry it to all the corners of our home/office space and visualise the smoke carry away all the stuck and low energies along with it.

You may now say your affirmations, like, “Any energy that may have entered this space/my personal aura, and is not of love & light, not for our highest good, is now being sent to the creator to reach its highest vibration and to be transmuted into love. My Aura/home space is getting purified and healed to bring in energies of abundance, health and prosperity.”

Once you have carried the Healing Smoke to all corners visualise it carrying all the negative energies up in the sky to be changed to highest purest light. Say your Gratitude Prayer to Sage or Palo Santo that you used and leave it in an earthen bowl, in your room (windows open) or in your terrace/garden. You may alternatively extinguish it by rubbing it on sand/mud floor, to use it for the next time.

You can do this small ritual daily or weekly or once a month or as your intuition guides you to. I usually start my daily practice of Tarot & Healing Sessions by first cleansing my personal working space and my own aura. I start by burning some Sage or Palo Santo and then I spray a home-made Crystal Elixir to set in the vibes before a tarot or healing session.
